The Physiology of Betrayal

When the nervous system registers danger, whether a lion in the wild or a phone notification at 10 p.m., it activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Cortisol floods. Heart rate rises. The body mobilizes energy to respond.

In short bursts, this is holy design: the body protecting itself. But when the threat never ends (deadlines, expectations, emotional labor) the stress response never shuts off. Cortisol stays high, then crashes. The vagus nerve stops sending signals of safety. The body loses its ability to rest.

We call that burnout. But physiologically, it’s a survival system refusing to serve a culture that will not serve life.

It’s your cells remembering the truth that you are nature, not machinery. You are not meant to be optimized. You are meant to belong.

How Systems Hijack the Sacred

Capitalism and patriarchy thrive on disconnection: from body, from earth, from each other. They convince us that worth is earned through productivity, that slowing down is laziness, that saying no is selfish.

The result? We override our body’s wisdom until it screams. We caffeinate instead of rest. We scroll instead of feel. We fix instead of listen.

Burnout, then, isn’t just an individual condition; it’s a collective symptom of systemic betrayal. Our bodies are mirroring what the planet is experiencing: over-extraction, overheating, collapse.
